Irlands einziger mit dem Nobelpreis ausgezeichneter Wissenschaftler, und kaum jemand spricht über ihn oder hat von ihm gehört.
Er wurde in Waterford geboren, studierte am Trinity College und war buchstäblich der erste Mensch, der das Atom spaltete (zusammen mit Cockcroft im Jahr 1932). Diese Arbeit veränderte die Physik für immer – und brachte ihm 1951 den Nobelpreis ein.
Wir feiern Dichter und Rebellen (fair genug), aber vielleicht ist es an der Zeit, dem Iren, der das Atom geknackt hat, etwas mehr Anerkennung zu zollen.

💯 – Robot Boyle always gets the limelight amongst Irish scientists.
I also think an honorable mention should go to the little known physicist, Erwin Schrödinger – ok maybe well known, but always remembered for his Austrian birth – but he was a naturalised Irishman
Schrodinger has a whole building in UL!
The SETU has the Walton Institute (on its own mini campus overlooking the river Suir) which is where the clever clogs invent tomorrow.
Btw Robert Boyle was also a Deise man
His great grandson (or great great) is a shit hot product designer / inventor of sorts too, still lives in Ireland. Ian Walton?
He isn’t the only Irish scientist to win it.
Also, the research wasn’t conducted here. I don’t think we cover ourselves in glory in that respect.

He was until [William C. Campbell](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_C._Campbell_(scientist)) won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2015.
I have a massive book about laboratory instruments Nicholas Callan used. Lots Irish scientists and engineers in the beginning of the industrial revolution.
He has a park named for him in Dungarvan, most people don’t really know why it’s called Walton park though, so, yeah
