Ostensibly this contract should be to deliver us submarines as quickly as possible to replace our decrepit fleet. Creation of domestic manufacturing jobs is a nice bonus, but not at the expense of speed and added cost.
Can we have just one military procurement that doesn’t turn into a boondoggle, please?
Do we even have the capability to build advanced submarines here? I’m not sure I’d trust any of our shipbuilders to „learn on the job“ in this case. Best to just let the South Koreans (or Germans, as the case may be) build the subs in their own proven facilities at get them to us as soon as possible.
If we try a „made in Canada“ solution it will most certainly devolve into a boondoggle, costs will spiral out of control, and the subs will be a decade or more late.
Canadian shipyards should be as far away from this contract as possible.
We would find a way to make them very lightly armed, like we did with Type 26, and well only get half the amount of submarines for double the price at a timeline stretching out until 2070.
My god the lack of imagination by Canadians after years of zero trade diplomacy is astronomical , not surprising though .
Germany companys and investors would invest in setting up manufacturing in Canada , they would be German built subs built by a german company in partnership with Canadian ship yards and built with Canadian workers in Canada.
Carney will most likely try to trade concessions on mineral exports to German aswell .
