Unsurprising, as the UK becomes more polarised and people are dismayed at politics and politicians. Ed Davey doesn’t help either.
Odd considering they had a good 2024 election in terms of seats.
While Green Party has doubled its membership since 2020, from 47,000 then to 94,000 members today.
I’ll probably be voting Lib Dem next election. Greens and Tories are both too extreme for me (never mind Reform), and they’re the only party remotely close to doing the one thing that would undoubtedly boost our economy: rejoining the EU
I’d be interested to see a full graph since 2000. I’d guess there’s steep rise from Iraq then another from Cleggmania followed by a massive crash after the rose garden and another uptick from Brexit and a steady petering since 2010.
The Lib Dem’s just need some more charisma, and a bit more of a media presence. It’s unfortunately now the age where most people get their political information when they’re scrolling on their phone, so if they’re not hitting that market, they’re going to be obscure.
The Greens are coming in fairly strong in that regard, and I’m here for it. My understanding is that all of their constituencies are doing relatively well too, which is much more than can be said about Reform’s performance.

Probably says more about post-COVID inflation and the shrinking prospects of rejoining the EU, which I’m sure will have been one of the main factors driving new members post-Brexit when they were the de facto party for remain
It goes to show how impactful the media is that the Lib Dem’s have over 70 MPs and get a tiny amount of coverage compared to the Farage circus with 5.
Fwiw the party had a huge boost in membership in 2019 when the Brexit snafu happened and they came second in the EU elections, but since then it’s tailed back off to where it was beforehand. Those memberships really didn’t translate into activist numbers very much.
If Sir Ed Davey is the answer, the wrong question is being asked!

Voted Lib Dem a lot as a younger man, always for me stood for progress but with a view of tradition in the way it moved progressively. Since the end of the Clegg, it’s just gone Liberal mental.
If there was an election today I dont actually know who I’d vote for, its like theyre in a competition to see who can be the least voteable.
Some people have long memories and maybe still haven’t forgiven them during their time in the coalition government with the Tories. Especially the students.
But guys reddit was telling me that the lib Dem surge was coming any day now.
The trap the LDs fall into is the same that starmers falling into; they are branded as the least bad option, sensible and moderate.
Which can be fine. But if no one is inspired who’s gonna pay fees, who’s gonna knock on doors? Who’s gonna motivate people to vote.
Sure politically active folk might care and go vote LD, but more still will just stay home. You can plaster over the gap in a base via bags of cash from donors, but then you risk having them drive your party.
When did people start giving a massive shit about party membership numbers and is there any evidence that it is predictive of vote share?

How does this compare with their pre-2010 membership? There were a load of people across the UK that joined the Lib Dems in 2019 to oppose Brexit, and will have slowly stopped renewing their membership after Brexit fully happened in 2021.
The Lib Dem’s haven’t recovered from the Uni fees U-turn, and probably never will in some people’s eyes.
I think they will pick up a lot of voters in both the Scottish GE and next Westminster GE. Labour are bleeding support as long as Starmer is in charge Tories are irrelevant. Greens haven’t learnt their policies are too extreme for the middle which is where elections are won. So in Scotland the pro Union vote will drift to Lib Dem if they don’t get seduced by Reform. In Westminster they are going to be the only non Reform protest vote.

Use to strategically vote for them but tbh there now even more boringly middle ground I think I’ll be going independent or Greens.
An entire generation has effectively been running on a treadmill working just as hard, often harder, but going nowhere financially since 2008.
And the only parties in power during this time were rich fk-the-poor tories… or „protect the children“ Labour.

I like a fair bit of the Lib Dem’s policy and think Ed Davey’s experience as a caregiver is something really needed in politics. Unfortunately some of the silly stunt stuff at the last election really put me right off them.
That’s what happens when you are a party that believes in nothing.
I really don’t understand how people on here think the Lib Dems could ever resonate with the public to the extent they cause a major political shift from the main two parties (in the way Reform look like they might do). I don’t think Farage will be able to provide the radical reforms that are needed but his impact is evident in how much they have shifted the Overton window since entering politics.
The Lib Dem world view is literally the status quo. Neoliberal economic policies, multi cultural progressiveness, open borders, huge welfare state bought by debt. Just a bland centrist ideology that labour and conservative actually struggle to differentiate from. It’s hugely unpopular and anyone who offers it has no chance.
