Im not sure how he did it, but based on that public interview they did it looks like Carney has put some sort a spell on Trump. Trump loves him for whatever reason and Trump does all his deals based on emotion and feelings so this should bode well for Canada.

Sadly I have trouble with being optimistic about a better trade deal because Donald Trump absolutely cannot be trusted and he’s both extremely unpredictable and mentally unstable and he’s likely to flip flop at any given time and start enacting more stupid tariffs at any given moment.

    3. It sounds to me like the Americans need our steel, aluminum and oil, so we will strike bad deals on those. Then the auto and softwood industries will be left on their own because the US doesn’t want us having those.

The steel and aluminum deal with probably be a quota at a lower tariff rate, then the Americans will unilaterally reduce the quota as their industries ramp up. For oil, if Keystone XL is the only new pipeline we build that will mean we will ship more discounted oil to the US rather than to the coast where we could get a better price.

Managed decline of our steel and aluminum industries, less money than we should get for oil and the quick demise of our auto and softwood industries.

I imagine next year’s CUSMA review will be the Americans giving six months notice of withdrawing from CUSMA and slapping down a really bad, take it or leave it, bilateral deal.

No, we won’t. Carney really needs to lower expectations for dealing with Trump rather than raise them. If Carney promises a better deal and doesn’t deliver, he’ll be blamed for that.

    5. Nah. They won’t get a deal and this is just posturing after the latest meeting.

They do this after every meeting to artificially drum up support because they’re getting hammered in the polls.

There’s a marginal group of Canadians that gets hoodwinked but ultimately they continue to erode their base in the long term because they’re disingenuous.
