Well they issued the tariffs without congress illegally, so it sounds like par for the course…

The old “we can just ignore Congress’s plenary power of the purse” routine. Constitution grants power of the purse to Congress, power of the sword to the executive, and SCOTUS relies on its legitimacy. With this, only the Executive will have power. This would be the end of our Constitution.

Okay this is evil smart. He is trying to set precedent, with a program that would paint the Democrats as evil if they vote against. This time $10 million for hungry children. Next time $80 billion for states that voted for him. The answer is still no, the power of the purse belongs to congress.

    4. Oh sure whatever. We’re just doing whatever the fuck we want now because it’s basically over. We’re in last-week-of-school mode, only there’s no next year.

Who’d have realised blonde women and old men were the true downfall of America

    6. so let me see if i have this right.

trump tariffs the fuck out of everything, causing americans to have to ultimately pay more. then trump cuts funding to the programs that support the poor and needy. then he offers us *our own money back* and pretends like it’s *his* money.

americans need to be reminded *why* these things are broken so that the whole ‚blame democrats‘ game becomes a non-starter.

Congress is in charge of the purse. It’s basic civics and this government could be doing something productive other than being schooled on basic civics every other week. These ridiculous fights are costing taxpayers tens (hundreds?) of millions of dollars.

    8. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to give a convicted felon access to a massive slush fund of illegally appropriated funds to do with as he chooses, but that’s just me, a guy who likes representative democracy and political stability.

He outright taxes the people than redistribute the cash as he sees fit….like a king.

Who would’ve ever thought, the country so proud of defeating the King of England for its independence would end up falling for a conman from Queens NY pretending to be a king.

What a century to be alive….

    10. “Trump plans to set congress on fire.”

“Congress cannot find rule barring this from happening and even if they did a majority of republicans would still buy the trump brand gas and matches to dump on themselves.”

“The Supreme Court voted 6-3 today that fire counts as a form of cleaning solution and that there’s nothing unconstitutional about a healthy cleaning regimen”

“Republicans furious that democrats will not come into the house or senate on the day the fires are supposed to be set. One congressmen said ‘the president made it very clear what he wanted and the fact that they are standing in the way of a grand funeral pyre and charred bodies in the name of the god emperor is simply treasonous, it’s frankly anti American.’”

“Republicans put forth emergency vote to expel all democrats who refuse to be burned alive and encourage the president to sign an executive order filling those seats with republicans loyal to the presidents vision for America.”

“In a stunning display of determination and unity the entire house and senate are now all Republican held seats. Unnamed sources say they are looking forward to carrying out the presidents wishes.”

“The house and senate set themselves on fire today. All of them died screaming. In other news Japan invented a pill that cures all forms of cancer.”

He wants to pay them out of tariffs for a loss he created because of tariffs. Charles Ponzi himself couldn’t think of this.

We are not at the precipice of autocracy. We have descended. Congress has abdicated all of its power to a corrupt President, who has violated the Constitution that Congress gave an oath to protect and serve. Responsibilities of which, should protect our democracy. It is the job of Congress to keep in check; oversights, overreaches, and abuse of power. In essence, Congress is the checks and balances of the executive branch.

If, if, if, Mike Johnson lets this go down, he needs to be impeached for treason.

I called it before and I’ll say it again: these tariffs are just a clumsy, transparent way of transferring wealth from Trump’s enemies (Democrats and blue states) to his friends and allies, and maybe some for red states if there’s any left over.

Another act to pilfer to tax payers and line his own pockets. This country is fucking doomed.

This will be Congress’ final nail. If they don’t control the purse as the founders intended, they control nothing

    17. OneSeaworthiness7768 on

Stephen Miller didn’t mention plenary power for no reason, folks.

    18. That way he can 10% off the top to directly to his bank accounts. We are basically at the whim of a third world dictator.

When is the media going to start referring to Republicans more often as „radicals“ and „extremists“? Why do they always say it’s Antifa or Democrats or the left that are „radical“? They’re literally spreading propaganda for the Nazis in the GOP.

    20. I’ve been wondering how the tariff revenue would benefit Trump. Now I see he intends to use it as his personal slush fund to reward lackeys or important constituents.

    21. So…Congress is just a club for golf, Manhattan’s and Old Fashion aficionado’s now?

    22. klauskervin on

If Trump controls the purse entirely than the U.S. government is no longer following the U.S. Constitution.
