From the article: In 2019, a small group of volunteers entered therapy rooms that looked more like living spaces than medical labs—soft lighting, soothing music, and a sense of calm. Each participant received a capsule of psilocybin, the psychoactive compound in so-called “magic mushrooms,” and spent several hours journeying inward with trained therapists by their side.
This wasn’t a psychedelic retreat in the commercial sense; there were no yoga mats or Bali sunsets. However, the atmosphere shared one crucial feature: a safe, guided setting designed to help people confront their minds. For many, the experience would prove transformative.
Five years later, the results are in.
A new study from Ohio State University and Johns Hopkins University, [published](https://akjournals.com/view/journals/2054/aop/article-10.1556-2054.2025.00461/article-10.1556-2054.2025.00461.xml) in the Journal of Psychedelic Studies, followed participants who first received psilocybin-assisted therapy in 2019–2020. Researchers found that 67% of them remained in remission from major depressive disorder half a decade later.
“Significant and sustained reductions in depression were observed, with 67% in remission for at least five years post-treatment,” the authors wrote.
This kind of long-lasting results—long after a treatment consisting of only two psychedelic sessions—is almost unheard of in depression research.
And still the world sits and does nothing because psilocybin only needs to be taken once and can be sold generically day one, so the drug speculation companies cannot make any money. Meanwhile much money is spent on ineffective SSRIs that cause sexual dysfunction, emotional blunting and when stopped often crippling withdrawal symptoms.
The world is a mess.
Had 100 suicidal thoughts every day for 6 years
Until quite a lot of macro doses over a year
Still get those thoughts, but substantially less
When they say in remission does that mean they no longer are on any anti depressant meds as well?
I also works for generalized anxiety disorder
I’ve been microdosing right before bed for almost 2 years and found relief almost immediately the first morning after waking up from my first try. I microdosed before bed for about 6-7 months and felt great and so I stopped. It lasted about 4 months until symptoms with my mental health came back. I started microdosing again recently and sure enough I wake up feeling way better mentally.
Obviously, I’m not doing it the ‚right‘ way as I guess I’m supposed to macrodose once a year and also be seeking some kind of integrated therapy to go along with the treatment, but I’ve just been kind of flying by the seat of my pants without any guidance. Either way, I can say at least anecdotally, that microdosing does work and if you struggle with mental health and I’d definitely recommend it
Out of personal interest, I wonder how effective this is when the subject is persistently exposed to their causes of depression.
I’ve had anxiety and depression my whole life.
In 2021 I took my first mushroom trip. After two trips the anxiety or depression hasn’t returned ever since.
It’s like it completely rewired my brain.
(I did work hard both before and after with therapy, excersize, eating right and working on my mindset)
One trip is equal to 1000 hours with my therapist. Hidden things I didn’t even knew I was carrying around revealed.
