This is a direct consequence of the Ford government. For all his talk about law and order he does not provide enough resources to the courts to do their jobs.
They made some recent-ish announcements around adding funding, but this is after slowing bleeding it for a decade.
Once again, a province completely failing on the administration of justice file and what’s going to be the result?
Crickets.
People.
We’ve got to start holding the proper governments to account for their failures.
This is a disgrace.
And that disgrace carries over into other areas like actual criminal law offenses and prosecutions.

I find it weird that they wrote this but didn’t include all the reasons charges can be dropped pretrial or at trial…
* Weak or insufficient evidence
* Police fuckup (mishandling evidence, paperwork, or just not showing up to court)
* Plea deals where a higher charge is dropped in exchange for a plea to a lesser charge
* Not enough evidence or support that they can prove without a doubt
* Pandemic Backlog – Charter Section 11(b) challenges for the right to a trial in a reasonable time
* Cost vs reward / Priority – Some minor cases would just take too much in resources and time to make it worthwhile
There’s obviously a backlog and they need more resources but to imply these numbers are due to only that is just ridiculous.
