People who argue Trump can’t be understood frankly only say this because there’s a refusal to truly accept that it’s not that crazy are hard. The dude isn’t playing 4D or 5D chess, he’s playing checkers.
Dude genuinely likes Mark Carney and likes his professionalism and competence. Trump hates weakness and perceived incompetence. He naturally likes the alternative.
Carney likely talks about economics in an advance way he respects and based on that Trump changes his opinion on Canada.
If Mark does something to piss him off or offend him, then he’ll take it as a personal slight.
It literally starts and stops there. His actual foreign policy objectives haven’t changed, he intends to squeeze us dry for as much value as he thinks he can, and is willing to play that game out, but now he just respects us a little more while doing so and kept help himself from being a little friendly as he’s doing it.
That’s literally it.
Give it 2 days. Trump will say something stupid about 51 state.
Don’t be disappointed when this goes all wrong. Rather be pleasantly surprised if this good will actually lives up to it promise
I hope the analysis in this article is right: relationships matter to Trump, but also that Carney has made a good case to protect our auto / steel / lumber industries.
I’m grateful that he’s the guy in charge. I don’t think Trudeau or PP would have been able to strike such a balance on those two points.
Of course the citizen boycott continues, but it’d be great to be out of the Trump spotlight when it comes to official national policy.
These meetings would normally not be televised beyond a conventional photo op. Not the interview style, reality show bs we get with this administration.
It’s all theatre. Nothing discussed has any weight in regards to treaties or agreements. Those are typically discussed in private, with back and forth for months until an agreement is met. If one is ever met.
The only reason I can imagine Carney agreeing to a meeting like this is to put things on the record, to appease the right wing in Canada that they are trying, albeit… to futility. And to appease the pompous pamplemousse so they don’t pay attention to Canada expanding trade.
He’s a business man and Carney is an economist.
They both want to look good in their jobs.
If he’s positive right now doesn’t mean he’ll remain so in the future.
These talks just had interests align. Or present the notion that they did.
The best deal we are likely to get is a quota at a lesser tariff rate and that quota will be reduced as the US ramps up its own domestic steel/aluminum/auto sectors. They don’t even need to spell out the reduction today, they can just impose it in future years and there is nothing we can do about it.
Managed decline of our manufacturing industries is what we are negotiating. We can’t replace the US market with the global market, distance and competition limit our capacity. From a domestic perspective, you can’t replace a country with 350m people for one with 40m.
Trump views us as in conflict with each other, he said it today.
As for the trillion dollars in anticipated investment, just like with other countries, Trump will take it and continue with tariffs and quotas.
For the last couple of months I thought our government was gaslighting us about how these talks were going. They were going fast, at an intense phase, would be wrapped up before the G7, at the G7, after the G7, by July 22, by August 1st and we got nothing. It was LeBlanc’s testimony before the senate last week that reminded me of his comment earlier in the summer, that the Americans kept moving the goalposts.
In short, they are jerking us around.
Trump likes winners not losers. He admires Carney for being different but well respected in various arenas.
If PP had won, even if he had done exactly what Carney had, he would have had nothing but contempt for him, just like he does for any of the dime a dozen scam artists who have tried his shtick less successfully.
Trump being in the position he is in now, can demand respect. Something he never could do but was desperate for earlier in life. He is infinitely amused that competent people show him respect like he believes he deserves. People who otherwise would never be in the same room with him have to stay there and tolerate him. Sycophants who were already sycophants will never scratch that itch.
Psychologically he’s in an optimal position for us, all things considered. Given that we actually have to deal with him.
