> “Your brain is constantly checking whether your body can keep going without getting into trouble,” explains Dr Dekerle. “Fatigue is its way of saying ‘slow down’ – not because you’re weak, but because it’s trying to keep you safe.”
> This new model of fatigue focuses on homeostasis – the body’s ability to stay in balance. When the brain predicts that continuing activity might push the body out of balance, it sends out fatigue signals to encourage you to stop or rest.
> Rather than pushing through exhaustion or doing intense workouts, the research encourages measured, consistent activity – like walking, stretching, or light cycling – as a way to rebuild trust between the brain and body.
> For too long, fatigue has been seen as a personal failing. This research offers a new perspective: fatigue is a protective signal, not a weakness. Understanding this could help people manage their energy better and improve their quality of life.

I definitely appreciate these findings as someone who suffers with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ME. There are a lot of people who think it’s a personal failing.
Why not just stop or rest instead of doing activity?
This article is acting like these findings are new, but they aren’t. It’s been known for a long time that fatigue is fundamentally different from mere physical exhaustion and can be bettered with light, adapted activity as opposed to increased training.
I’ve had MS with fatigue since 2021 and was already advised accordingly, but it’s been known and applied way before that. Noone at all in a professional field thinks fatigue is a personal failing or would subscribe exhausting sports for it as results are bad and it worsens the condition.
The contents of the article are true, but it’s literally a whole decade or more late which is confusingly bad journalism.
I read „light cycling“ like in Tron and immediately stopped reading so I wouldn’t be disappointed. Just sign me up.
