      Fuck big pharma. They’re still profiting at the price the NHS buys at, otherwise they wouldn’t be selling them anything. Greedy fucks.

      One massive benefit of the NHS that most don’t consider is the sheer bargaining power of having a single body negotiate and purchase drugs for an entire nation.

      They pulled out of a £450M investment after Labour said they wouldn’t fund it, and they’re threatening not to spend £250M on a new research site at Cambridge.

      This is then mixed in with the AZ chief complaining about the NHS pricing structure, without articulating at all how the NHS pricing approach is in any way bad for the NHS or taxpayers. All we get is:

      >Mr Grady said: „We’ve failed to keep pace on medicine investment over the years.“

      >He accused the Government of falling behind other countries when it comes to supporting innovation and warned that patients were missing out on cutting-edge treatments as a result.

      How are they missing out? 

      This absolutely reads like a company playing hardball with the government on new industrial investment because they want to make more money from the taxpayer. Don’t give in, or they’ll do it again (and so will others).

      I’ve said it before, make a drugs division of the NHS that then competes against these companies globally. It could tie into education and the industrialisation of science as a national industry.

      It’s the only way to make the NHS affordable in the future as we become an aging population that needs more and more drugs

      We could do with having our own laws allowing other companies to use drug patents if the cost is too high, like india does.

      How about we nationalise AstraZeneca? It’s based in the UK and most of its employees and operations are in the UK.

      If they want to attempt to play hardball with the government over NHS medicine payments, the government should have its own stick for negotiations.

      Asking the government to support innovation is one thing; claiming that the only way to do this is to pay US prices is absolutely another.

      And ridiculous.

      The NHS is huge buyer & in a free market is perfectly in its rights to throw its weight around for better pricing.

      Forgive my ignorance, but I’ve always thought that this type of research should be in a public body anyway. When profit is a factor, how can you really trust the outcome of a clinical trial or drugs study? 

      We should have a public body specifically for drug creations and trials. The output could be quite lucrative to sell internally, if the government wants it to generate a profit.

      I see it’s now a distant memory for AZ back when the UK government defended them from other countries heavy criticism during their COVID vaccine rollout…….

      This is the beauty of the NHS. It’s by no means a perfect organisation but its structure means they are able to drive down drug prices for the benefit of the country and its people. It’s been a thorn in the side for the vulture capitalists for years.

      I think that aligns with their plans to invest 50B in the US manifacturing after Trump’s tariffs, they even abandoned the plan to build the new building in Cambridge that could have created 1000 jobs they say. They will bring the money to the US instead

      The amounts they have pulled is like nothing to them.

      Considering the same companies have all announced building in the US in the billions. It’s obvious what they are doing.

      UK pharma is not just AZ, yes AZ is a big name, but there’s a lot of other companies I would argue do more than AZ do at getting drugs out there

      We should be creating our own medicines and cures in England.

      Bigpharma need the NHS privatised so they can charge through the nose. Individual pharmacies won’t have the same negotiating power as the NHS and NICE.

      We will go from having to pay for medications but also the cost of each medication will sky rocket.

      Investing in what? They aren’t a charity. They got the world to take a drug which we don’t know the full side effects. That’s gonna costa us in the long run. The weird lump I developed after the second jab is now scheduled for removal.

      Time for a little bit of a reality check for the commenters from someone involved in the sector. 1) AZN is a global company with <5% of sales in the UK at crappy margins so even if they left the UK no big deal 2) the NHS can’t nationalize anything. The UK’s life science sector is in the doldrums. 99% of drugs being discovered in the world are not in the UK, nor are being produced in the UK. We don’t have the skill or talent to discover new drugs, this is a global sector, one country can’t do all drugs from dermatology to oncology etc.

      We need private companies to succeed – the UK only has two out of hundreds (astra and GSK) and these are old dinosaurs at this point. All successful nations and economies have a thriving private sector across various arms. We can’t just be relying on accounting/banking/legal/3rd class IT jobs. The NHS as a monopoly has to strike a balance between bargaining hard vs being fair, same argument for nurse and doctors wages, pharma pricing hasn’t kept up with inflation.
