A good statement rare for an Irish politician
An opportunistic move to say the least, trying to get on the right side of this nice and early.
Regardless, this is the fallout from a mess Fianna Fail created themselves. Although they’ll keep saying a process was followed and he was selected etc.. But virtually every senior member of Fianna Fail came out with glowing support support of Gavin before he got the nomination, it kind of set a precedent that you have to vote for him.
So it was only ever going to go one way, and Gavin was obviously fairly naive in terms of thinking his dirty laundry wouldn’t come out. People are more than capable of sitting on information for years, and airing it at the right time, and this is what happened here.
Thta’s a bold move if ever there was one. He’s deliberating separating out Gavin from the leadership, so that the focus of the fuck up can be on the hasty and poorly executed nomination, and not on Gavin himself – because he’s no longer relevant.
He’s pretty clearly saying here, „The FF leadership have fucked up and now need to be held to account“.
I wonder who he’s got on his side? Because he’s young and has a clean slate, figuratively, then he’s a wise person to be the one to make this statement, but he’s definitely not acting alone.

Why does this feel like it lacks any real empathy for the people who were left without money.

In some ways it’s fucked Fine Gael as well like HH was relying on Jim’s transfers, I’d imagine more people are now inclined to just stay home rather than making the effort of actually turning up to vote for her number 1.

Maybe stop pretending that Presidential nominations are the business of the party whip. Maybe let every TD and Senator nominate whoever they think fit, and quit threatening them with party disfavour in order to control nominations centrally.

Jim Gavin is still on the ballot. What happens to his votes, and more crucially, his no 2’s. If they push HH over the line, will it be a valid election. Only in Ireland.

Let the battle for party presidency begin. That is a clear statement about how inept Martin and Chambers are. He is trying to push them out.
It’s fine to acknowledge the mistakes in putting him forward, but defending Jim Gavin’s behaviour is ridiculous. He stole from someone and lied about it. I imagine the only „advice“ he received was to ignore it because it would cost them more to take him to court than the money owed.

Why are these folks ignoring the fact that he failed to repay the tenants after repeated requests and legal threats, and still owes them money to this day? If he really wanted to correct a mistake made in the past, he had 16 years to do so.
