The value isn’t there. Ironically (for me at least) the range is. I’m just not paying what they are asking. Also intrest rates are terrible, as that goes down perhaps things change again.
We were in the market for a vehicle upgrade to accommodate a child seat. We looked at EV’s last year, but they are just so expensive. We opted for a low KM used vehicle because the space it offered was great, and because EVs are just too expensive to invest in ATM.
We don’t drive a ton, so we’re not using that much fuel. We fill up maybe 1-2x per month. We also rent, so we’d need to charge in town, which isn’t the end of the world as there are tons of charging areas now.
Cause the options SUCK!
Your choices are a freaking Tesla or some $65k+ luxury model from the NA/EU automakers.
Hyundai/KIA have some, but they too are meh.
Type of models too don’t even get me started on the Crossover trend 😒
Shit, even petrol/diesel vehicles options are shit. Like I don’t want a freaking truck/SUV. Even if it’s $35k.
Blame the manufacturers (and perhaps the Chinese EV ban if anything)
I would LOVE to make the switch to an EV and have been prepared to do so for years. But the choices for EVs to buy in 2025 are still abysmal! There are no affordable station wagon or hatchback options at all. It’s either overpriced luxury style coups, oversized SUV and trucks, which are also far too expensive and fancy for regular people, or some tiny 2 seater. There’s basically nothing in between, it’s ridiculous.
I’m actually in the market for an EV in BC right now, and ready to buy – but I’m waiting for European & Chinese EVs to be let into the market because:
– I don’t want a Tesla (Nazi cars)
– Allowed non-Teslas are either even more luxury/less value priced, or too poor quality for their price
– I’m waiting to see if Canada maybe starts their own EV company (low chance but highly interested if so)
– If none of the above, I’ll buy a Citroen or BYD or something when they become available. There’s no reason to defend American car companies from foreign competitors when America is our enemy now – so these tariffs will drop at some point during Trump’s term in office (or terms, given the rampant election rigging they are setting up down there).
In other words, assuming I reflect other buyers right now, the demand didn’t drop at all – it may have even increased – but it’s stalled anticipating exciting new changes to come soon. Meanwhile we’ll all just drive our ICE vehicles into the grave before we upgrade.
Edit – If I see a good deal on a Polestar I might bite, or if my ICE dies before the above.
Give me an EV I want to buy and I’ll buy it. Domestically all the EV’s are shit and the government isn’t allowing Chinese EV’s in. So there you go
