This story says more about the corruption of Japan’s tariffs than it does about nefarious criminality. Prices are high in Japan because high rice prices benefits JA at the expense of the public and the LDP works on their behalf. The fact a staple like rice has become so expensive that it’s profitable to smuggle and blackmarket really tells you something.

I imagine we will see more and more of this kind of things. Rice is so expensive its almost becoming a luxury. 4000-5000 yen is not a cheap ask for a lot of people. Saw one of my kitchen staff eating instant noodle for lunch. Then saw her eating the same thing like 5 days in a row. Had to talk to the management to bring back staff meal. Mostly just fried rice, spagetti, simply cheap stuff/left over ingredients but the staff are grateful. The hotel i work for is part of a big corporation as well, everyone is paid decent, and even my team are struggling. Times are tough.
