> “I think, now, when you get asked to do a movie, or you’re trying to get a movie made, it’s a very confused pipeline of possibilities,” Tatum said. “It really feels like, at times, that you’re incentivized to make bad things to get paid, rather than make something really, really good, for the fucking people that actually get to see these things and [for the type of] people that I want to see these movies, the person that I was when I was a kid. And I want good movies.”
> He added, “I’m like, ‘Man, I want to give my money to the good movies.’ It’s such an upside-down moment, but I do believe that the disruption is going to lead to something good. I do believe that. I do believe the streamers came in for a reason, and it had to change. It had to morph.”
Ya, it’s a paycheck. Thats why you do them. There’s the old concept of “One for the studio, one for me”. You do some bullshit to get enough cash to do something cool – which has a much lower chance of making money.
There’s an old story from back in the late 80s when Samuel L Jackson was working on Die Hard 2 and Bruce Willis gave him the advice that he should get himself attached to a franchise since regardless if they’re churning out junk, they give a steady income that then allows you to do what you want. So, he signed onto things like the Star Wars prequels and the MCU to have enough cash to do the scripts he loved, most of which most of us couldn’t remember.
Apparently, that’s the advice he gave Brie Larson when they were doing Skull Island together and she was iffy about saying yes to Captain Marvel since she liked the arty movies more and didn’t know anything about comic books, and that put her over the fence to say yes which gave her the income to make her own show and do plays and the like inbetween showing up for Marvel stuff and doing a Fast and Furious movie.
It’s good advice. While it would be nice to only do what you want, you also need to eat.
