> “Of course, there are techniques you can learn, and I know that the Method has become an easy target these days,” he said. “I’m a little cross these days to hear all kinds of people gobbling off and saying things like ‘gone full Method,’ which I think is meant to imply that a person’s behaving like a lunatic in an extreme fashion.”
> He continued, “Everyone tends to focus on the less important details of the work, and those details always seem to involve some sort of self-flagellation or an experience that imposes upon oneself a severe discomfort or mental instability. But of course, in the life of an actor, it has to principally be about the internal work.”
Clearly whatever method he uses works, so the trash talking just seems like sour grapes.
I remember in the early 2000’s method acting was heavily criticized as well, but I was also working in the theatre scene and knew a lot of stage actors at the time.
It’s clearly performative for some actors. Like he says, some actors seem to use it to manufacture suffering that they can point to in an attempt to embellish the credentials of a performance, for awards or otherwise.
I think do whatever works for you as long as you’re not being an arsehole to other people but the method of a performance doesn’t matter, only the quality of the result.
It only works and is not questioned if your name is Daniel Day-Lewis. Lol. It doesn’t elevate the work of other actors to nearly enough a degree to justify the behavior for most actors, I think.
Not the same but I remember the story that Dustin Hoffman would live a very secluded lifestyle and wouldn’t sleep in order to get into a paranoid state of mind for Marathon Man. He told the story to Laurence Olivier and he said “Have you tried acting,my dear boy?”
I like him, he doesn’t give two shits about this press bs when it comes to his acting.
An actor who starves himself to lose 60 lbs for a movie role is crazy.
Kinda feels like he’s pulling the ladder up behind him
It’s crazy how Jared Leto single handily gave method acting the reputation it has currently.
People just like to hate. Jared Leto hate is fine cause the rumours are he’s just a piece of shit but hating on Austin Butler cause he can’t shake an accent that he’s been method acting with for the past 6-8 months is just people hating to hate.
Let’s be real. They do it so they can get away with being unbearable assholes. If a female actor did this they’d be labelled as “hard to work with” and blacklisted.
Jared Leto who just turns „full method acting“ to gain publicity for himself, so he can add to his harem of underage girls
Method Acting is criticized because, if the cameras aren’t rolling and I ask you, ‚hey would you like a muffin‘ and you act psychotic like your character (because the characters are usually mentally off or very violent with this method is used) then yeah, Imma shit talk your little method.
He used to get the business back in the day over his method acting too. Is he a great actor? without question. Has he gotten on people’s last nerve and made enemies with never breaking character? Absolutely. Even on „Lincoln“ he tried people’s patience. Both things can be true without conflict.
He definitely annoyed the crew on „My Left Foot“ when he stayed in character by crawling all over the set and disconnecting cables everywhere.
While I’m not a fan of method acting, I think most people assume all method actors are Jared Leto level bad.
