„Bleiben im Staub“: Fordert Hilfe bei der Aufräumarbeiten von Sask. Die Stadt wird in Kult nach wie vor

This is the headline the article gave me. But it seems to me, given that this is a sewage problem, that dust is the least of the town’s concern.

What I don’t get is how the sewage was allowed to accumalate for so long. How hard can it be for the town or a group of citizens to get a court order a) to move the cult out and b) hire the appropriate contractor to clean up the sewage c) sue the owner for damages? It seems to me this was going on for years.

This is not a rhetorical question. I live in a small town, am somewhat active in local politics, and I can see a number of scenarios where this could happen. Small towns often have no experience in dealing with shit like this (literally).

Edit: As I see it, this could be a growing problem. This cult seems to be a social-media based phemomenon. The articles linked in the OP suggest this was a Q-anon conspiracy theory group that morphed into a sovereign citizen cult, who use pseudo-law to tie up the U.S. court system (it’s harder to do in Canada). Sovereign citizens do things like drive without a license (usually suspended because of drunk driving) because they believe that the pseudo-law they write up using legal dictionaries (usually written up by a low-level grifter) gets them out of following Canadian laws. The „Queen of Canada“ designation appears to be an attempt of the leader to usurp the role of the Crown. In reality, the people who follow them tend to be people with criminal records that have trouble taking accountability for their actions, they believe that their defense lawyer is on the conspiracy, so it follows that these groups tend to be active in prisons.
