Sounds like customers have made their choice. The incessant calls for levies on everything are a patronising and lazy way to implement change.
This is such a shame, it’s been amazing to not see coffee cup litter in the national park, I hate the idea of going back to the way it was before.
It’s true that there needs to be buy-in from everyone — the project was working because all of the businesses were participating, so you could drop your cup off wherever you were closest to, and folks couldn’t just go to another cafe for a disposable option.
I really can’t think of a downside to a levy on disposable cups, other than that people might be mildly annoyed for a bit. Have the govt given any reason for going back on the idea?
Good, let people make the choice. Glad a lot of the woke nonsense is changing.
I’ve seen similar schemes here in The Netherlands and they work very well. It’s slightly different in that you get a token for a free cup when you return your current one instead of your money back. It is only a €1 up front investment but it does encourage you to keep using it, kinda like shopping trollies.
It’s really no inconvenience at all when you get used to it. I don’t get why people are so against it.
The thing we tried to do has failed because no-one wants to do it. Therefore we want the government to pass a law to force people to do it.
That **should** be the title.
Before covid quite a few coffee shops were offering money off if you brought your own cup. It was starting to catch on but got cancelled as soon as everything shut down but since then I don’t see coffee places offering it.
Also the amount of coffee places I say I’m having it there then give me a disposable cup for takeaway is way too high. Even places that clearly have mugs, it’s like the staff just choose the easy option
