China’s dramatic public display of a new eight-axle Dongfeng-61 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) during a September parade has renewed debate in Washington over how the United States should modernize its aging land-based nuclear force. Some experts urging a fresh look at road-mobile ICBMs as a way to reduce costs and increase survivability.
The article talks about if we need to.go back to mobile launchers.
Sooo.. about them subs though.
I’d bet money a certain politician saw the big rockets in a parade and got jealous. Now someone has to humor them even if they don’t fit US defense posture.
What key role would a road based icbm over a silo based if we are in a counter strike launch. One of the key benefits of permanent silos is that they are placed away from population centers and would be the first targets.
Are the missiles fired by these truck able to get the same range. If we are firing missiles second we’ve already lost. Do we just want to make extra sure the planet is trashed?
This is what weak/growing countries without ballistic missile submarines do.
