It’s a fact that that Russia is trying to get under the good graces of the current Syrian leadership, as access to their air bases and ports is critical to Russia’s projection of military power.  Part of this deal could be to kill their mortal enemy which is Assad. It would no doubt be a positive for Russia’s relationship with Syria given that he used to bomb the leadership running Syria now. Assad is no longer of any use to Putin. He’s more useful dead.

I would also note that Putin has poisoned and failed to kill many people the first try. He is being guarded by the Russian government. No one else has the ability to poison him.

    2. under putin’s nose or at putin’s direction?

he doesn’t want useless deposed dictators hanging on to his coat tails, they either need to be useful or they find a convenient poison or high up window.

Russia still has interests in Syria and that means working with the new regime, not protecting the old one.

    3. His presence in Russia is probably inconvenient for Russia. The new Syrian government probably want to put him on trial. Russia probably want to restore relation with Syria. Russia does not want to send him back, because it would make other puppet state fearful they cannot rely on Russia as a exit strategy.

      > “The source confirmed that the Russian government had nothing to do with the matter, but it may have been intended to implicate the Russian government.”

Uhhh okay. They must be desperate to reverse a thing they’ve been doing which is to receive and protect ex puppet government heads to show all the others they will be rewarded and protected. Isn’t there a place on Rostov on Don for these guys? It’s kind of like putting up a sign to all the other Putin puppets you’re on your own now?

      > Rami Abdul Rahman, the organization’s director, said a “reliable source” told him that al-Assad was targeted in a “poisoning operation.”

Hmmmm…I’m not sure this is very credible.

    6. It was Putin. Putin needs access to Syria and Assad is the enemy of those leaders… they say jump, Putin says how high.

Seems like a lot of work when you could just have some FSB goons throw him out a window and fake a suicide note lamenting the loss of his power driving him to “suicide”

Ukraine did it /s. Expect Sims CD shown as evidence and pirate/stoner who travelled through the whole Russia in a swastica t-shirt and back to be accused.

The Novichok-Polonium smoothie didn’t sit well with Bashar? I’ll inform the cook staff to do better next time.

    12. > Poisoned Under Putin’s Nose

What a funny way of writing „By Putin“.

:‘) don’t threaten me with a good time, Putin.

Assad is the man who gassed his own people, sparked a revolution by torturing children, and massacred hundreds of thousands of civilians by bullet and barrel bomb. The man looks silly in whitey tighties but he is not a joke. His regime’s atrocities somehow dwarfed those of ISIS. And unfortunately, he has found a haven in Russia.

If the ex tyrant dies like this, good! He should fall in some byzantine Russian geopolitical plot. Thousands of Syrians died for that cause. He will never face justice in The Hague or Damascus. This is the next best  thing

This guy probably has a lot of Syrian money in his accounts. His wife has leukemia, no one cares about the rest of the entourage. If they disappear no one would care. Be a shame if this deposed dictator died and Russia had to be in charge of all those millions of dollars. They would hate that.

    15. No_Match_Found on

Guess that’s on par for sPutin or falling to your death from a 2nd storey window?

    16. This guy better stay away from windows and balconies from now on. He might accidentally fall from them while gazing out.

    17. The good news is that life will be terrifying for Assad. Every time he eats, sleeps, drinks, etc., he knows it might lead to an excruciating death.

    18. QuicheSmash on

Remember when he used bombs and ricin on his own population.

I hope it hurt when he was poisoned.

    19. denn1959-Public_396 on

Well we know Putin has a habit of poisoning folks he is tired of

    20. I suppose this means Assad felt awful about something and swallowed the poison himself as opposed to jumping out of a window?
