That whole program is dumb and a waste of money and ressources, two thing that Ottawa do not have the luxury to spare. Everyone with some basic grasp of the topic knows that, but the Liberal are still surfing on the urban folks who, too often, do not see the difference between a M-15 and a 12 gauge shotgun (if it’s black).

Is the CBC being deliberately deceptive here, or is it just a happy little accident? The feds have repeatedly refused to provide a definition for what „assault-style“ means, and this has been a constant theme throughout iterations and feedback on this program. Who is the „they“ the author is quoting? Is that actually a genuine reflection of the weapons targeted?
The author later notes a list of weapons that are being banned and provides examples of them being used in shootings, but neglects to mention what the legal status of those weapons were.
Firearms have never been a big priority for me. I certainly don’t think owning them should be a right. But I’ve always thought prior to the crackdown on „assault style“ firearms Canada had very reasonable gun laws.
This program, laws, and the new restrictions have been nothing but terrible policy decision. From program cost to non fact based policy. I can’t imagine it’s scoring enough political support to justify the ridiculous levels of disgruntlement it’s causing. All it’s doing is fueling and giving some legitimacy to the more ridiculous side of the right.
Worst part is Carney had the perfect opportunity to have a fresh start on this and cancel it. But instead seems to be doubling down. It’s the long gun registry all over again but worse.
