Really interesting, if eccentric, figure. The same could be said of much of the Childers family as well.
Also he wrote a book called Riddle of the Sands that was adapted into a film in the 70s/80s starring Michael York.
Basically a British amateur yachtsman foils a WW1 era German plot to attack the British fleet. Worth a watch!
He showed true bravery at his execution. He made his son (who would later become president) swear to shake the hand of every member of the government who had signed the order for his execution, then shook the hands of every member of the firing squad.
