We are not in a lunar space race. We won the race decades ago.
The only race is the race to put the first humans on Mars. And SpaceX is miles ahead of the entire world combined.
The general sentiment from America is that any type of advance in space exploration is just „billionaires playing in space when there are more important things on Earth“ People like stories about space exploration but don’t seem to have an interest in what it takes to make it happen, a lot of it is boring and science-y and the most apparent things you see on tv are billionaire companies.
It can’t, too much profiteering. The billionaires in America are hoarding wealth and using shit like automation and ai to hoard more.
The whole “more than a dozen Starship launches for orbital refueling” is just not feasible. I’m quite amazed that important people are simply rolling away with it in a serious way and everyone acts like “sure, it can be done!”. No, it can’t. Not in this decade.
Basically returning to the moon hasn’t been a priority for the US for decades. NASA’s budget get smaller and smaller. Meanwhile mission creep gets bigger and bigger, before everything getting refocused onars and then back to the moon and different administration cancel plans by their predessors.
Basically long term scientific investment is not possible in America if it makes headlines. Nixon would have cancelled Apollo if it wasn’t 6 months out when he became president. Clinton cancelled the SSC to fund the ISS to save a billion a year and then W spends a billion a day on GWOT.
Like all things in America, if you taxed billionaires appropriately would could afford things like infrastructure and space exploration.
Honestly we should just quadruple NASA’s budget, have them work closely with US space force and some of the technologies Space X has and get back ahead
America can’t though. The billionaire’s just want to play with each other in space while NASA is now a spy agency.
unsurprised to see none of those commenting have read the article so far😅

Best thing that could happen for the US space program is for China to do some big nationally proud accomplishment like building a moon base first and having a big flag on it.
Americans on the whole don’t give a shit about space, but they hate losing and love winning.
From the article:
>NASA had already walked on the Moon and sent spacecraft across the Solar System and even beyond.
Belief that the NASA that walked on the Moon and the NASA of today are the same organization, is one of the mistakes that got us to where we are. Those two agencies have almost nothing in common except the name and some facilities.
And the part of NASA that sent spacecraft across the Solar System and even beyond, has little to do with the manned space programs. Its existence tells us nothing about NASA’s ability to put men on the Moon (or Mars).
Last time I checked, China – and every other country for that matter – are still 56 years behind the U.S. for the lunar space race. China may be able to accomplish this nearly 60 year old feat before the US can do it again, which is something, I guess. I just don’t understand all of the pearl clutching over this.
