If we will actually start thinking in terms of subtypes and treating symptoms rather than the broad, porous diagnostic label that is autism, I think we’ll see more and more successful repurposing. Memantime, barclofen, bumetanide, oxytocin, NAC, suramin, leucovorin, etc lots of small or N of 1 successes, most of them treating a specific trait.
„Some evidence suggests that glutamate can be imbalanced in the pgACC in individuals with ASD, possibly explaining behaviors and symptoms related to communication and social interactions“
If this is true: is a low glutamate diet enough for some people or is medication the only way?
I have ADHD and perhaps some kind of neuronal hyperactivity/hyperexciticity. I started low dose memantine as an adjunct and many things unexpectedly improved.
I stopped getting daily mild afternoon headaches which I’ve had commonly my entire life (unrelated to ADHD pharmacology).
Mental and especially mood impact of a less than perfect night’s sleep was significantly alleviated. I no longer woke up, feeling exhausted and mentally excitable (quick to snap).
Overall excessive ruminating thoughts towards anxiety or whatever OCD drastically decreased.
The drug is amazing for many symptoms.
Unfortunately, the side effects are pretty extreme at first but mostly go away over time. Do you want to know what working memory is? The adjustment period starting memantine will show you what it is by its absence.
