I’ve always had tenuous feelings about this stuff.
On the one hand, I don’t want the old to be hungry or in need.
On the other hand, they’ve had a lifetime to prepare for their old age, and it seems a very significant amount of people don’t bother to prepare a pension of any note themselves, they think the government will cover everything. This is an increasingly unstable, unattainable reality as the country gets older, and has less kids. The state pension was never meant to cover all of your needs.
On the one hand, I do believe we should provide. On the other, I know its often their own lack of preparation and an unsustainable system.
I don’t think there’s a clean fix. Looking at the pension rates of my the current generations, we’re fucked.
She’s right, one day we will all be old. The problem is, you need to plan for it yourself. Hoping the state will be able afford you is naive, and you’re told this your whole life.
I don’t think a single mother of 3 who worked as a cleaner would have have much disposable income for a pension, I’m sure it was a struggle to get through the week as it was. Definitely not a case of “didn’t bother” to plan for retirement..
Isn’t the state pension like 290 a week? She isn’t paying rent, she isn’t paying for transport, she isn’t paying for medical care, she’s paying for food, heating, electricity and social events, surely 290 a week is enough for that? I spend like 70 a week on food and that’s with takeaways, are electricity and heating bills really 200 euro a week?
EDIT, I somehow forgot property tax even though it’s specifically mentioned, I guess that’s another like 90 euro a week, but still that surely breaks even
As our economy soars we must not forget about the elderly who helped build up our state from its foundation.
Wheaten bread is soon forgotten..
I agree with her the Property Tax is a disgrace. Just because you own a home does not mean you can afford property tax.
