This is sad. I hope all animals have peaceful lives.
This basic data is not beautiful, and it wore on me. I drive all day for work, and this is a collection of observational data over a four-month period within about a 50 mile radius throughout the Chicago suburbs. Kept numbers on my phone then put them into excel at the end of each month.

This was very rudimentary and there was definitely a margin of error. I might have counted some animals twice, but I may also have missed some as well. Many of the animals that were unidentifiable were due to the condition they were in (long decayed, or too heavily damaged) or from driving at speed/not being safe to pull over.
Is this what RFK is having the CDC do now?
Line chart for each animal over the same time period. Reduce it down to maybe top 5 interesting ones. Color code them. Add vertical bars or some indicator for their respective mating season. Then you’d have a great interesting chart.
Another undiscussed casualty of Americas focus on mass transportation through automobiles in poorly planned cities rather than better mass transit using trains and more walkable neighborhoods.
Instead of caring about anything like the natural world, which god said we are the caretakers of, we would rather focus on a way to extend private profit.
I did this once on my road trip down the east coast of Australia because we were in the middle of nowhere for hours with no service, and there was an insane amount of roadkill. After I counted over 100 animals I got super depressed and stopped. The main ones were wallabies, wombats and foxes 😕
I’m surprised there aren’t more deer casualties in the Chicago area. Deer roadkill is very common in Minnesota and Wisconsin—even in suburbs.
You killed more animals in a week than i in 25 years of driving
Tf is wrong with u
Data are interesting but you should never use 3D especially without a particular purpose, but just to make things „pretty“. This is one of those rules that if you break them, completely ruins a visualisation.
You might be interested in the book “Crossings: How Road Ecology is Shaping the Future of Our Planet.” It deals with this exact topic, and other relevant road impacts on wildlife. There are quite a few scientists working on this exact kind of accounting, as well as solutions.
I’m reading it right now and fair warning it’s a bit of a depressing read, though it does talk about all the people working to make it better.
A sandhill crane?? Minks? Pretty rare finds.
Roadkill has its seasons, just like anything
There’s possums in the autumn and there’s farm cats in the spring

OMG it took me a while the UID where unidentified, I thought they were Under the Influence D….
Never make a chart 3-D when it only represents 2 dimensions of data.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a chipmunk as roadkill.
Around here it’s mostly raccoons, squirrels, rabbits, and opossums with the occasional skunk, deer, vulture, or cat.
Did you make a game of this?
