Moral tone of right-wing Redditors varies by context, but left-wingers’ tone tends to stay steady

I think this is natural, though it is interesting to see the evidence.
People expect moral statements like „genocide is bad“ to be a universal value, but something like „trans people are bad“ really depends on your audience drinking the same kool-aid that you are.
Well, right is right whoever you’re amongst.
EDIT – to clarify, *correct* is *correct* whoever you’re amongst.
Conservatives don’t have principles.
No surprise, right wing „morals“ are actually about in-group/out-group identity.
I wonder if this is affected by the general left wing skew of Reddit.
mixed company? on Reddit?
It is a tired point, but right wing commenters tend to lack empathy. For example, when attacking LGBTQ people, they treat them as a monolithic bloc of people making bad moral choices. There is no attempt to consider them as individuals or to consider their struggles as anything but bad moral choices. This simplistic reductionist perspective is amplified in the echo chambers where these folks are less likely to be challenged by their peers.
Conservatives tend to be rigid, applying absolutism to moral and political judgments, which this article confirms.
I am old enough to see an evolution of values among more liberal leaders. In 2008, when Obama was running for office, he did not support marriage equality, offering a weaker „domestic partnership“ approach for same sex couples. By the time he left office, he was in strong support of full marriage equality. The same shift seemed to spread across the democratic party. When I look across the right, I see de-evolution, reverting to stronger judgments and backsliding across civil rights, including race, gender, and sexual orientation. People are never static, but conservatives seem to be moving in the wrong direction.
It is an overused term nowadays, but this demonstrates literally a population that holds more genuine (cognitive) empathy for other humans vs another population
I’m wondering how they define what is right and left.
Literally from the article „Prior studies have linked moralized political beliefs to stronger bias, more extreme behaviors, and greater resistance to democratic norms“
Meanwhile people here are trying to outjerk each other on how much better they are because they don’t compromise on their morally correct views, unlike stupid right wingers who don’t think the other side is evil. I’m not even right wing but this is beyond parody.
Moralize
verb
1.comment on issues of right and wrong, typically with an unfounded air of superiority.
„the news media are sure to moralize about the arrogance of power“
Similar:
pontificate
sermonize
philosophize
lecture
preach
preachify
ethicize
2.
reform the character and conduct of.
„he endeavoured to moralize an immoral society“
This is the lest r/science post I’ve ever seen.
Because we have principles.
„Scientists find that people who identify as on the Left, actually have consistent principles, while the Right modulate their tone depending on their audience.“
Finish the sentence.
„…which means that The Republicans are lying and the opposite of moral.“
So left-wingers are more reliably preachy and obnoxious, regardless of context?
Wow, it’s almost like thoughtful people have consistent ideologies and liars will say anything to get what they want.
The way I see it is the „left“ wants to view humanity as it actually is and try and improve it for everyone where the „right“ seems to want to make everything better for themselves at any cost. It’s not exactly that simple, but what’s actually simple anymore?
While I don’t share the belief you’ll find in some circles that all right-wingers are inherently dishonest, I do think that right-wing ideologies tend to be more attractive to people with few or weak principles.
Conservatives more moderate about left in neutral environments, but 2 times more extreme in their rhetoric about left within their groups
You can’t be a humanitarian and republican simultaneously. They have no moral compass. Just one indoctrinated by religion that is far from ethical.
Coward versus actual patriots. Maybe those right leaning folks could learn something from this, if they could that is.
This tracks. Conservatives know their views are very much indefensible in mixed company, and therefore need to be distanced from. For instance; conservatives are opposed to WICs programs because they view it as encouraging women to be single mothers. Everyone else, including moderate conservatives, finds that line of thinking unpersuasive, and therefore to justify it they have to wrap it in layers of fiscal responsibility, even if these programs are drops in the bucket budget wise and increases GDP and support local farmers/businesses.
Right wing conservatives know their morals values are in the minority, as it is very hard to argue against feeding the hungry and healing the sick when talking to people who either grew up Christian or are “Culturally Christian”.
So right wingers need their safe space to talk what’s on their heart.
