Zero hours contracts should be abolished in favour of flexible working hours.
Zero hours should’ve worked really well for me both times I was at uni and needed a part time job… But the employers on both occasions took zero hours to mean „we can give you anywhere between 0-30 hours of work per week, if you say no to any of it we’ll not offer you anything else (until we piss someone else off and need you)“.
They’d routinely hire 17 year olds because of the lower minimum wage, and then pull the same move in late spring when those students would have A-Levels. Saw multiple parents come in to tell off the store manager for their pushy behavior.
I was hired as a student, very clearly stating my schedule in the interview, and within a few weeks was being scheduled in during lectures.
Yeah there’s some big employers like Aldi that mess with zero hours contracts, but it’s small employers manipulating staff that need to be cracked down on, or staff offered a streamlined way to flag abuses with rotas.
6 months before you can bring an unfair dismissal claim instead of 2 years is a massive win. Right now you’re basically expendable for 2 years unless you can prove discrimination. Ideally it’d be from day 1 like the unions want, but aligning it with the common probation period window is a big improvement.
I recall working as a Christmas temp at sports direct ten years ago, back then you didn’t even build up holiday pay and about 90% of the staff were on zero hours contracts.
Guys I was working with had worked there for several years with no paid holiday – it was really depressing to see and made me hate the company.
