I used to fish wild oysters for years in Kerry during the season, this is extremely dangerous! Whatever about illegally fishing them, they are potentially putting people’s lives in danger!! Most wild oysters contain high levels of the norovirus and have to be treated in specific ways to make them safe, so this isn’t just taking a few oysters, it could literally lead to a health outbreak and potentially fatal to some people. Idiots deserve the book thrown at them

I saw this happening just outside Kenmare about 3 weeks ago. Three French vehicles parked up and about 20 people wading in the water at low tide. Saw a few returning with what I thought were scallops.
Thought nothing of it, didn’t know anything about the legalities of it. Locally it’s been said the same group come over every year to do it.
I used to collect shellfish…
but then I pulled a muscle 💪
