Further, even if one is of the mind that “by the end the schools were run by the bands, and they willingly sent kids there!”, or even “we can’t judge them by the moral standards of today, these people legitimately thought they were helping!”, that doesn’t change the fact that horrendous stuff went down, and there’s nothing wrong with a day of remembering that.

For once the Tyee tries lays out what’s going on exactly. The reality is that years later these graves still haven’t actually been confirmed and where they did some digging there were no graves. There’s a massive industry of non native companies and people making money on this and the standard of living for native people is barely improving even after huge investments. But we can’t talk about that because even hinting that this is going on will have consequences for your reputation and livelihood.
I haven’t heard many conservatives denying the atrocities which happened at residential schools in the sense of abuse etc. However, what I have seen is many conservatives being scolded and disgraced by rags like the Tyee for even questioning the very slim and in many cases already disproven evidence behind mass graves.
EDIT: I see the rule 8 crowd is in full force already.
