I got dared to punch this guy Trevor Scott in high school once. Trevor was way bigger than me. So I ended up punching him and then Trevor kicked the shit out of me.
What scares me about this is that I can’t see any logic to it.

the article is paywalled and I’m to lazy to bypass it at the moment, what are they threatening if nato shoots down a russian jet in our airspace? aside from nuclear escalation where they lose just as badly as we do, I do not see them being capable of anything remotely threatening to nato, even without full US support in the case trump is actually compromised, while still needing the vast majority of their military forces in ukraine and their quickly diminishing equipment stocks there as well?

Like that time Turkey did after warning Russia to not fly their planes through their territory to bomb Syria. Russia backed down like the fucking cowards they are.
Russia’s army is being held together at this point by duct tape bought from China. They won’t do shit if NATO decides they’ve had enough.
Maybe they want an escalation to try to bring others like China & NK in?

Why not just shoot down the aircraft/drones that have violated NATO airspace but not report it to the news?
Let Russia be the one to say „Hey, they shot down our planes that were over their territory!“
Putin is a nutcase. He does not have broad support from China or India, he is winging it and in desperation pretending to befriend North Korea. The Russian people will have a huge debt to pay when he reaches end of life, and he is in his late seventies.
I think this makes the people of Europe more inclined to send money and weapons to Ukraine. Not a clever move..

That’s it. Putin is counting that NATO will be too much of a chicken to dare to shoot down intruding Russian plane that blatently violate NATO airspace.
If NATO does not bite the bullet and take the dare, Putin will escalate his poking to a point that NATO will have to act defensively eventually.
This is the same situation just before WW II when Hitler kept on pushing his luck until the west was finally forced to act after Poland was invaded.
Had the west acted promptly on the very first invasion Hitler did on Sudetenland, it would have nipped Hitler at the earliest stage but we know what happened. Hitler won his bet and it continued until the bullet started flying in ernest called World War II.
Shoot down anything that comes across NATO airspace. Anything, including human piloted military aircraft.
That’s defensive NATO, no one can claim aggression except Russia.

Without the threat of a nuclear strike by Russia, NATO air power alone could change the war very quickly.
By Russia’s logic then, it’s perfectly acceptable for other countries to fly through their airspace. If that’s the case, why are they having a problem with Ukraine’s drones flying into Russia („Even if it’s not by accident“)?

They’ll push NATO to the extreme limit so that Trump will have to expose himself as the Russian he is, then the American public will be forced to acknowledge it, and if they’re still on board with him, the war is over and Russia won.
Technically NATO already shot. Turkey did and I haven’t heard of Russia flying planes over them since the last one blew up.

Part of me wishes that some NATO country like Poland or France who just nut up and deploy into Ukraine and just shit stomp Russia back to their 1990 border. Russias threat of nuclear war is nothing but a paper tiger and its time someone called their bluff. I know it wont be the US while theres a Russian asset as a sitting president but one could hope.
