I honestly had to re-read the headline. This proposal is bad enough even without considering the timing; the Carney government is actually supporting the UCP’s oil and gas ambitions, and in return Smith starts another fight. Real nice.
That’s… interesting! I’m all for extra provincial autonomy so I’m curious to see how this still play out.

If a province can do this, can’t the federal government just pass a law requiring provinces to comply with international obligations committed to by Ottawa?

These seems broadly in line with how the division of powers works, though. International treaties don’t, and can’t, alter the division of powers between the federal and provincial governments. The Library of Parliament has published a pretty thorough [explanation](https://lop.parl.ca/sites/PublicWebsite/default/en_CA/ResearchPublications/200845E#:~:text=5%20Conclusion-,Executive%20Summary,implementation%20and%20coming%20into%20force) of how Canada goes about implementing treaties that it’s signed.
In summary, this bill (like most of Alberta’s provincial sovereignty bills) wouldn’t actually do anything. As described, it sounds like a legislative tautology („Alberta has jurisdiction over the things over which Alberta has jurisdiction“).

I will just ‘consider’ passing a law that exempts myself from paying taxes too.
Both of these are impossible under the law. I would like the Alberta Government to pass this and then once it is overturned by the court (as it will be faster than lightning) then Danielle Smith will use the Notwithstanding Clause to suspend the Constitution in order to have it stand – only to see that she can’t use the Notwithstanding clause vs. anything but personal rights. Which she has already done.
