      One of the issues I have with SSRIs like fluoxetine is that they can cause anhedonia—or even make it worse. While they may reduce some depressive symptoms, the flattening effect on motivation and pleasure can feel even more difficult to live with.

      Prozac has been a godsend for me. It’s the only medication that’s made a true difference for me in my lifelong depression. I’ve always been overweight and had a low sex drive, so it certainly hasn’t *helped* me there, but it definitely makes me not want to yeet myself into an abyss or…stay in bed all day.

      Long term, it’s helped me become more the person I want to be. I do CBT with my therapist, and I think that and Prozac have changed my life.

This is one of those findings where perspective is needed in that its trying to find out ‚what do they do‘ at a more detailed level, as most of our knowledge is more at a ‚black box‘ level where we know from research it has some positive and some negative impacts but not exactly why – the ‚it fixes the serotonin imbalance‘ meme was always more marketing than fact.

      I think this is a bit overenthusiastic in regard to ‚this is why it works‘ but its intriguing and hopefully will lead to more targeted interventions that are less ‚dirty‘ with the side effects we get for now.

    5. Could this also cause things like a functional neurological disorder? I’ve been told my FND is due to bad neurological “connections” in the brain. And was on a round of fluoxetine prior to diagnosis.

      I’ve been on Prozac for two years now and it’s truly changed my life. I’m more active because I’m not sleeping all day so I’ve lost weight but I know I might be an exception. The biggest game changer?? Helping calm my OCD symptoms that I didn’t even know I had until they stopped!! Like not everyone obsessively counts stairs or freaks when friends move my perfectly placed tchotchkes??
