Wow, where in Iranian Azerbaijan? My mom’s (from Tabriz) had similar but also different results. Anatolia/Caucasus was her largest category, then Iran/Persia, but then she also got Mongolia/Upper Central Asia and 1% Northern China.
Lower Central Asia is usually different, often associated with Bukharan Jews. Do you have any Jewish heritage? And northern Iraq/Iran is usually connected to Assyrians. Any Assyrian heritage?
Edit: Also Southern Italy/Eastern Med could be connected to Anatolian Turks from the Aegean side. Several of my mom’s family members have it, she most likely also has Anatolian Turkish ancestors.
Why doesn’t it say Azeri?
Pay a bit extra and upload your raw dna to illustrative dna. Ancestry dna on its own is worthless since it just shows likely region instead of going deeper
Illustrative dna also shows stuff like closest populations youre genetically related to and which ancient populations make up your dna
Living in Iran doesn’t make you Iranian, you and people in South Azerbaijan are Caucasian and turkic.
This map shows the places where people reported living or being from, similar to your DNA. So it means your ancestors migrated to Anatolia whereas some part of them migrated even further away to Balkans: Italy, Greece etc.
For me, it also shows Italy, Albania, Greece, etc. But there are no Italians or Albanians in the list of matched people. Most of them have Turkish names, so this reflects how far my ancestors or relatives traveled away, rather than me being Italian or Greek
Which test vendor is it?
