Oh, I am sooooo in favor of this. And I’m a driver/SUV owner.
But yeah, it’ll never fly as long as Ford is Premier.
In the last Toronto city election, a downtown city council candidate ran on bringing in a congestion tax to the core. He didn’t win, but the idea got attention.
New York and London already have a version of this, and it has proven results with reducing traffic during peak hours, increasing use of public transit, and generating revenue for the city that goes back into transportation infrastructure.
I’m all for it. The data is there from busier cities than Toronto. However, with a pro-car premier in Doug Ford, he will ban this. All because the GTA hates this idea when it was proposed, since they don’t want to pay more for commuting into Toronto. GTA residents don’t pay taxes into Toronto, yet every good idea to generate revenue, gets shut down by them. And the OLP is guilty of this practice too when they shut down tolls on the 401.
At this point, I’d welcome banning street parking at least on major streets in order to improve traffic. Or at least increase parking fees, yet I’m sure Doug Ford will shut that down too. It’s so frustrating.
This is a fantastic idea and if is working in London and New York.
But 2 major things.
1. New York and London have incredible and elaborate subway systems as alternatives.
2. The nature of their cities is they can have certain control points. Toronto has way too many entry points and paths into the core and we already know from current Metrolinx/TTC initiatives how much time and money it would cost. Billions and 10-15 years.
