I’m usually a unionist (teachers/nurses that kind of stuff) and side with unions. But this one is asinine. The business is dead in the water. It is not profitable in its current state. Needs to be reorganized and reconfigured so it can still get packages and mail everywhere in Canada. Guaranteeing permanent, full time employment hours is not doable right now. Figure out what the new system needs to look like first.
It has to be said in every thread. Government services shouldn’t have to be profitable. They should serve the people in this country with what they need. If services were profitable, then they wouldn’t need to be services.
Paring down the postal service and justifying it with „it’s not profitable“ is just one more example of how we are stripping down our governments until they no longer serve us effectively.
Good luck. They have no public support. And if the government passes legislation ordering them back, and they refuse, they all get fired and the rest of us wouldn’t shed a tear for these entitled union whiners that are too delusional to see reality.
The federal government should just put up a RFP for letter mail and private providers can submit proposals and bid on a 10 year contract. That would be my negotiating tactic if I were the federal government.
Honestly, if the union thinks that their demands are in-line with the market, then they’ll win this. But if other companies can deliver the same service without these massive losses, then that tells me that Canada Post is just too inefficient to exist. If the offers come back and they want more money than what Canada Post gets, then maybe the union has a point.
I just got home from two weeks of vacation. We had a friend check in on the house and pick up our mail. We live in a rural area with a mailbox at the side of the road. When we got home early Wednesday morning, our friend had collected a grand total of ONE letter, plus a couple of advertising flyers. That’s it. It’s time for the postal workers to to realise times have changed.
Now excuse me, I have to go buy a new buggy whip for our carriage…
We need more general strikes to stand up in solidarity with the workers defending our public services.
