    1. I’d argue it’s more like Chamberlain in the 1930s, too little too late

    2. CurrencyDesperate286 on

Ok so were the Soviets or the US wrong to build up arms at the time too?

Such a terrible comparison, Germany has absolutely zero designs on anything even remotely similar to the 1930’s.

If she actually wants to be our main diplomatic representative, she’d want to have a bit more basic cop on than slandering one of our main allies by comparing them to genocidal fascists, especially with the sensitive history.

    3. More evidence she is a good local politician but has zero knowledge and experience on the international stage.

How the hell can you compare today’s German re-armament to that of the Nazis FFS

    4. I’d love to live in a world without armies. But that’s not the world we inhabit.

Considering all that’s going on with Russia and the like we need strong European forces.

      Irelands neutrality depends on it.

    5. I know people believe that the media have an agenda to make her look as ridiculous as possible and accentuate every controversial word she says and maybe they’re right, but the truth is she puts her foot in her mouth constantly.

Imagine being in this position and getting something so fundamentally incorrect. What a misread.

Ah yes, if theres one thing modern Germany loves its being compared to the Nazis, just the sort of rhetoric we need from a future President.

Wow… I’m honestly impressed, are we sure she’s not a sleeper agent to utterly cripple the left in Ireland cos I’m not sure one could be doing more damage than she is…

    9. 0scar_Goldmann on

It’s actually pretty impressive the rate at which she’s torpedoing her own campaign

Looks at the Polish having the largest battle tank army in Europe…’Am I a joke to you?‘ Nice Rheinmetal you have there, would be a pity if someone were to annex it…

    11. How does someone like this actually make it this far in politics and be in the running for president, really hard to credit

Any hope of a preference is gone. Very surprised at Labour, Greens and Soc Dems for backing a loose cannon like this. She’s pitching herself as a Higgins continuity candidate, but she couldn’t be further from it. Higgins is so careful with his language, but Connolly doesn’t think at all.

She’s like the hipster version of Gemma O’Doherty.

    13. Can we get some left leaning candidates that have a foreign policy beyond “war is bad, peace is good” while ignoring any of the surrounding circumstances.

What’s her deal with not mentioning that Russia is the main reason Germany is rearming? She just completely glosses over that and almost frames it as a European overreaction to the threats from the east or even worse compares EU Germany to Hitlers Germany of the 30’s, what the fuck?

This sounds eerily similar to viewpoints of Putins Russia I’ve heard over the last 4 years. „The Germans are nazis and the west is dangerous and reckless for reacting to our actions“

Hope she crashes and burns in this election, we don’t need anymore Neville Chamberlains running around appeasing the worst of the worst just so we „might“ be okay in the end.

I really hope she doesn’t get elected. I’m from Galway and am familiar with what she was like as councillor. She’s a decent woman but she’s not a president.

FFS Catherine. All you had to do was stop saying stupid things. We would have voted for you.

News flash: Germans not baddies. Russians are baddies. There is this thing called the EU. We’re part of it.

    17. Lalande21185 on

      > „I think we should draw on that experience and use all our skills as a neutral country to go down a road of peace,” she said. “If we lose, we lose, but you lose by war anyway. But let’s try. Let’s say this is wrong.“

A nice sentiment if you stop your thinking at „you lose by war anyway“, but if you think about the very important point of what comes after, Russia invading a heavily armed Germany is much preferable to Russia invading a disarmed Germany.

I really can’t stand her kind of thinking – war would be bad either way, so if we hit a bad result in our imagined future, *just stop thinking about it*. You have to plan for what happens in the result of bad events too!

    18. I never comment on politics but in this case simpleton is a compliment, she’s basically a vegetable. Left, Right, whatever! I thought people from Galway had a little more sense than to vote for someone like this

    19. Mad how she didn’t have a comment when Russia was re-arming. Funny how she missed that one.

      Must be just an oversight.

    20. MarionberryHappy1944 on

She’s spouting pro Putin points. She’s almost as bad as the MAGA crowd

    21. Hour_Mastodon_9404 on

The biggest angle of attack against Connolly is going to be that she is sympathetic to Putin – statements like this aren’t going to quell that.

While I don’t think any logical person would be a huge fan of the idea of a heavily militarised German state, it’s probably worth noting that they aren’t the most immediate of theats in Europe to be calling out at the moment…..
