As a former Crown Dependency, anyone born pre 1997 should have been granted UK citizenship anyway.

      Time to link [this tweet](https://x.com/chungchingkwong/status/1970388650077888848):

      > We are here because the UK:

      > 1. Colonised HK

      > 2. Failed to include HKers in the negotiations with the CCP

      > 3. Failed to respect our right to self determination

      > 4. Failed to uphold the Sino-British Joint Declaration

      > 5. Failed to hold the PRC to account

      > 6. Substituted accountability with a visa scheme

      > We are here because the UK betrayed us twice. Now they want to betray us again by messing with its surrender policy?

Giving Hong Kong British nationals the right to move here was both the right thing to do morally, ethically, and economically. I don’t like to give the Tories credit, but I was very impressed with their action on this.

Has anybody ever met one of these Hong Kongers? Off-topic but curious. I wonder if they are concentrated in London or something

    5. The article/report isn’t about immigration, it’s about the ones already here transferring their pension funds here. (Admittedly the guardian is fairly flimsy on the explanation).

    6. I can guarantee you that the Hong Kongers pay a lot more in tax than they use in benefits. These are the people that Reform wants to expel from the UK.

Not if Farage gets his way. Making Britain poorer is one of his main achievements. After Brexit this is his next plan

    8. They’ve transformed Cambridge, one of my favourite cities, in the UK! And it’s all a plus.

I think most British people have no problem with immigrants who contribute. It’s the ones who don’t who we have major issues with

Are these real numbers or numbers puffed up by richer hong kongers coming in and buying property?

    10. Idk who this think tank is but it would obviously be worth a lot more than 4bn to the UK economy to bring in tens, hundreds of thousands, or even millions of citizens from a country that used to be a part of our empire and is now one of the most economically and generally nost advanced cities on earth.

4 billion sounds like a number that a 5 year old makes. Just sounds big.

In country terms, 4bn is small fries. The knowledge, skills, and connections that this would bring us could well be more like 400bn, given time to grow to fruition.

One thing that perplexes me, is we always talk about HKers being super wealthy, but it’s not the case, there is a stark have/have not divide, and I guess like the UK but more extreme, it’s tied to the property market and home ownership

It’s interesting, but we never really hear about the existence of poorer HKers. Also would they theoretically have the right to move to the UK?
