The opposition calling for his firing did themselves a disservice, some internal punishment is an obvious outcome, but that’s not going to happen just because the opposition yelled about it. It refocused the issue to seem more about him embarrassing the party and just came across as a long of distracting grandstanding so people could stand up and show off.
I’m not pleased with the way the minister responded to the whole situation, but I also don’t consider it surprising given human nature that when they started going hard he just doubled down instead of being open to addressing the issues. So now we’re stuck with him doubling down, Carney busy with the UN and the UK, Provost getting in the middle, and a couple conservatives feeling good about getting to stand up for the camera while nothing changes.
If Carney wanted to get himself an out from this and look decisive, he would both fire Anandasangaree and dump the buyback plan at once. He needs to get rid of Anandasangaree one way or another, because he is a national security risk and gaffe machine, and it’s the perfect opportunity to throw him under the bus, let him wear the consequences of this and move on.
