    1. I mean, we don’t have any marines in the first place to send in.

We could maybe send in a couple lads from the Reserves for a weekend? They’ll have to fly Ryanair and checking a rifle is a pain in the hole.

    2. Paywall but surely someone isn’t seriously suggesting the idea of “sending in the marines”‘or something such to bail out the flotilla?

We can’t even adequately police what’s literally in our own backyard, never mind deploy troops in overseas without relying entirely on commercial charters or the kindness of friendly militaries.

Ireland is totally impotent in situations like this.

The triple lock prevents us from sending anymore than 12 troops to anywhere outside our own island or waters even when we’d have full dail and government approval. We’d have to get permission from the UN which the US has a veto for to even send a rescue mission in this situation. Which is evidently ridiculous for a foreign power to be able to control our military in that way.

    4. I never thought I’d say this, but if Sinn Fein are advocating dropping the triple lock and buying several new warships for the navy I’m in full agreement with them. And maybe we could use some jet fighters for air cover, along with a heavy transport plane to transport all this kit. The government should move on this immediately while we have such political consensus.

Jesus Christ, this is awful. Hopefully everyone on the flotilla stays safe.

This is yet another example of why the Triple Lock must be scrapped. Our government has tied a noose around itself by restricting international deployments that would otherwise be used to safeguard Irish lives abroad.

I’m a bit lost, rescue? Shur they tipped off on their own volition. Is it not their look out?

Why support Catherine Connolly for president if you oppose the triple lock?

Don’t suppose we can invoke the defense pact of Europe? An outside military seizing an aid flotilla in European waters is an act of war.

    9. Sinn Fein go on about protecting the triple lock. Without the triple lock, if the government was so minded, they could deploy a naval vessel to the med to accompany the flotilla or deploy troops to assist with the humanitarian efforts of this flotilla, alas…

The triple lock made perfect sense in the 20th century. I was a huge believer in it.

But the USA, Russia and China have spent 25 years undermining the UN to such an extent that the triple lock is actually hampering our sovereignty not guaranteeing our neutrality.

I’m not for joining NATO or anything. It’s just this legislation made sense in a different global context.

    11. Yes THE only thing stopping the Irish government deploying it’s blue water navy supported by it’s global reach air force is the triple lock … and a blue water navy … and an air force with global reach 🤔

they could 100% send in the rangers if they actually gave a shit, nobody is going to stop them

The triple lock which they all support would prevent us from sending assistance even if that wasn’t an issue we don’t have the necessary military capabilities to counter the threat due to a lack of funding for the defence forces against something the entire opposition supports. Maybe it will open their eyes and make them realise that having such capabilities is important when it comes to protecting you people.
