Maria Steen suddenly thinks people should have the right to choose.


Not that we’re being spoiled for choice, but I for one am delighted Maude Flanders didn’t represent our country. What an out of touch, backwards representation of Ireland she would have been.

This is fantastic news. For someone like Steen, becoming president was never a realistic possibility. She will have known this. What she wanted was a platform to spout her religious dogma. She would have insisted on 25% speaking time across all televised debates etc. This was all a play for publicity. I’m delighted that the opportunity has been denied to her.

The closed system of nominations has its pros and cons, but there’s a bit of inconsistency in that in the last 3 open elections we got a very broad field (6 candidates 2018, 7 in 2011, 5 in 1997), and this time we are getting a super narrow one (3 candidates) – last time we got 3 was in 1990. Basically the big parties were happy for a wide field but aren’t this time and closed ranks.

Maria Steen does represent a slice of the electorate that the 3 candidates we now have probably don’t align to. Minority consent is a part of a well functioning democracy.

(I personally didn’t enjoy the 6-7 candidate elections, but I think that when you break the seal and go have a wide field and let your councillors etc nominate, you’ve set a precident).

I am honestly surprised. I believed it was a foregone conclusion that she’d get the nominations.

Catherine Connolly is the only candidate who is in any way similar to Michael D in terms of compassion and integrity in my opinion. She’s the obvious choice. Heather Humphries literally told a journalist the other day to “F off and leave me alone.”

There’s an argument that significant minority views (in this case hardcore Catholic conservatism) should have a candidate in these sort of elections, to give a voice to those they represent.

Which I think is a fair argument, if that minority view is significant and worthwhile enough to deserve that position. Because obviously not _every_ fringe belief deserves to be represented by a Presidential candidate.

It was on Steen to convince people she deserved that nomination, in the way plenty of other candidates have in the past. And she failed. So tough shit, really.

If the people Steen represents want more of a voice than that then they need to start winning more seats in other elections, or put forward Presedidential candidates who are actually able to secure the nomination. It’s not everyone else’s fault that they struggle to get support.
