Carney highlighted various opportunities to enhance trade between Canada and China, particularly in clean energy, conventional energy, and agriculture, while also addressing steel tariffs during his conversation with Li. He noted that improving trade ties with China has become a priority for Canada, especially in light of the changing U.S. trade policies. Despite a complex history marked by a recent trade war, Carney emphasized Canada’s potential as a reliable trading partner. With China being Canada’s second-largest trading partner, there is significant room for growth, as evidenced by the $30 billion in exports to China in 2024 compared to $500 billion to the U.S.
