Iran still has the capacity to advance its nuclear weapons programme after Israel and America’s airstrikes this year, the head of the UN’s nuclear watchdog has told The Times.

Rafael Grossi, the director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said that the Iranian government still had the means to manufacture the centrifuges needed to enrich its uranium stockpile.

“They have the capacity. A number of centrifuges may have escaped damage,” he said. “They have places where they manufacture these components — rotors, bellows and things — where they do all these activities. So if they wanted to, it would just be a matter of time.”

Inspections of Iran’s nuclear facilities have resumed after Tehran suspended co-operation with the IAEA after the strikes in June, which devastated several power plants including the Fordow Uranium Enrichment Plant, Grossi said.

But his agency has yet to be given access to the government’s uranium, which was enriched to 60 per cent purity before the 12-day war in June. To be weapons-grade material, this stockpile would need to be enriched to 90 per cent, according to the IAEA.

“They seem to be quite protective of this,” said Grossi, who is receiving around-the-clock security protection after being subjected to a reported Iranian threat against his life. “They believe that this material could be still subject to more attacks.”
