Because Trump wants to shut down the government. He wants to blame it on the Democrats. He wants to declare it a national emergency and with that declaration cut the Congress out of the budget process (which is of course illegal, but this SCOTUS will sign off on it).

I struggle to imagine a path where we get to a place that the country is ever run professionally and politically anymore. Backed by the legal system, the constitution, and science.

Well yeah, why would he negotiate? He’s an authoritarian who controls all branches of government. He or his handlers are probably (correctly) making the calculation that Schumer and Jeffries will blink before he does.

To be clear: Trump never intended on having the meeting.
This is actually a textbook narcissistic manipulation tactic. Trump creates chaos and confusion and hopes the pressure building will lead democrats to make a fear based decision at the last minute with everything changing so fast. It worked last time and Chuck didn’t think through the actual implications of his vote. That’s what this technique is showing.
I really wish they’d do like Gordon Ramsay said and

And only bring it back up once they have sorted out a proper government.

He is not negotiating because he feels he has the upper hand and thinks that democrats will fold. If there was a time to not fold, this is it. If they do, they can kiss their mid-term ambitions away. They also need to be very, very loud on what they are demanding (healthcare, ect) as that has an effect on everyone.
Probably for the best, really. All he’s gonna do is lie to their faces and make them smell his leaky butthole. This is for the best.

A piece of this a lot of people seem to miss is Chuck Schumer basically just went on CNN said he “hopes and prays” Trump will negotiate with him. And when asked what Schumer would do if Trump doesn’t negotiate or if Schumer would be willing to allow the shutdown, he just repeated over and over that he “hopes” Trump will negotiate.
Schumer is basically already signaling he won’t do a shutdown, when the threat of a shutdown is the *only* reason why Trump would ever negotiate.
Government shutdown and defaulting on its loans is all part of the plan.
Anything to collapse the current system to replace it with a Christian Nationalist state.
Have the meeting, it’ll be empty, a spot will be there for someone from his administration with no one sitting there.
Invite the media into the room and direct them to the empty chair with the little placard on the desk that says “White House” and say you are waiting on the administration to show up so you can discuss avoiding a government shutdown.

Schumer and Jefferies are the least effective leaders, maybe in the history of the Democratic party. They both need to step aside and allow someone else with more of a backbone and some fire in their belly to fight this bloviated orange bag of fat in ill-fitted blue suit.
