    1. >After Congress passed the Communications Act of 1934, creating the FCC, the commission enacted strict limits on how many broadcast stations (both TV and radio) a person or company could own. In 1953, for example, the FCC established the “rule of sevens,” where no one could own more than seven AM, seven FM and seven TV stations, nor could those stations reach more than 25% of Americans.

      >But the deregulatory fever that gripped lawmakers beginning in the 1970s, and was supercharged during Ronald Reagan’s presidency, came for media ownership as well. In 1985, 7-7-7 became 12-12-12. The 1996 Telecommunications Act — passed by a Republican Congress and signed by Democratic President Bill Clinton — removed the caps on radio station ownership entirely and increased the TV ownership cap to 35% of households. More broadly, it confirmed the end of the New Deal view that media consolidation should be restricted.

      >“When the government has allowed for decades of consolidation of media and technology companies,” says Gigi Sohn, former nominee to the FCC during the Biden administration, “it becomes a lot easier for authoritarian government to exercise control because there are just fewer entities to pressure.”

      >If these moves come to fruition, pro-Trump (or at least Trump-friendly) billionaires will control TikTok, X, Facebook, CBS, CNN, Fox News, the Wall Street Journal, the Los Angeles Times and the Washington Post.

One reason I like this piece is that it’s doing what 99% of stories fail to do: It is not only reporting on the news of that day, but it is telling the long-term story of authoritarian media takeover.

We’re not a homogeneous society, they’re going to kill their chances of maximizing profits by trying to force one narrow view.

I’m willing to bet that the good news is these networks will be belly-up within a generation, maybe even a decade. I’m a younger millenial and nobody I know actually consumes legacy media on their own, I only get tidbits from new media influencers and podcasters or Reddit.

I certainly don’t pay to keep media afloat. Especially with all of the boycotts recently…

Sounds like great ways for billionaires to end up with worthless media companies.

      Pay attention.

Fascists take over the media. If they control messaging, they control you.

Trump doesn’t read many things, but he does read Hitler. His favorite author.

    7. Evolutionary_sins on

Pretty soon the only thing on TV will be Stephen Miller reading Mein Kampf

    8. masterchefguy on

Most of mainstream media is right leaning already and has been for a while. CNN should have rebranded as Conservative News Network a long time ago, even though the right keeps calling them liberal.

This is the real story. The kimmel dismissal is the very top of the iceberg.

Sinclair broadcasting and the Smith cartel aren’t bending the knee to the fascists. They are the fascists. Just look at the shit rage David Smith tunred the Baltimore Sun into. The administration will lift the 40% viewership cap, fascist will own the narrative and viola we’re in the state run media matrix. It makes me crazy that this story isn’t getting more play.

    10. Time to break up monopolies. Then have the FCC bring back The Fairness Doctrine.

    11. I think it’s time we start recognizing what’s really going on at the top of the government. I don’t even think there’s such a thing as „pro Trump“ when it comes to policy or anything. He’s just a puppet with a big mouth. Where are all the articles about the Heritage Foundation and the likelihood that Trump quite literally doesn’t know anything that’s going on?

    12. Hey, America- let’s tell them to go fuck themselves, in the most financially punishing way possible.

    13. Plane-Engineering on

Sooner or later when all your freedoms are gone, you’ll have no one to blame but yourselves. The world will soon close its doors to Americans trying to move abroad.

    14. I know it is exactly the same, but TKO/UFC/WWE may as well be a Trump mouthpiece at this point too.

    15. tigerjuice888 on

Stupid question but aren’t there “good” billionaires that could team up and fight the “bad” billionaires?

    16. Gain-Western on

It looks like Trump has taken cues from fraand Modi even while they make fun of his caste

    17. Business_Guard_5816 on

Pro Trump billionaires are taking over everything. It’s called Project 2025.   We were telling everybody about this since before the election but nobody believed us. Now it’s too late to stop it.

I encourage everyone in this to read up on Peter Thiel, Marc Andreessen, Ben Horowitz Chris Dixon, Brian Armstrong, and the investment firm Andreessen-Horowitz.

That VC firm is the vessel through which conservative billionaires are striking. They should be public enemy #1 to any and all Americans.

They do so with the blessing of Peter Thiel. And they are laundering money through Coinbase/Brian Armstrong/Cryptocurrency.

    19. If cable thought they were losing subscribers before, I can’t wait to see how it’s going now

    20. TheOhrenberger on

Then we just stop watching their channels. Let those billionaires become millionaires.

Declare Sinclair Media a monopoly and return the stations they control to locals

    22. Count_JohnnyJ on

We need to start accusing Sinclair of broadcasting too much woke stuff and turn the simpletons against them. MAGA has proven time after time that they can be easily stirred into a fervor over nothing and its time we employ this powerful weapon to our advantage instead of theirs.

    23. Are they under the illusion that people don’t have a massive amount of content choices these days? If they want to kill their networks by lack of viewers, that’s on them.

What happens once America becomes a full dictatorship? Can it even be saved?

    25. NUMBerONEisFIRST on

That’s also the reasoning behind Trump making sure he knows who controls TikTok before launching the new US spyware/tracking filled app.

    26. There needs to be like a „Radio Free America“ to help people in the underground find security from these people.

    27. Remember when people were concerned about 95% of the media being controlled by a handful of corporations?

      This is why.

      TV news.
      Billboards.
      Magazines.
      Newspapers.
      Bus station ads.
      Internet banner ads.
      TV shows.
      Movies.

      Under control.

    28. All the pro Trump billionaires need to be looking at the billionaires and millionaires in Russia when they are thinking (short term )they’re doing something in their self interest.

    29. pinewind108 on

I think ABC settling their previous lawsuit was actually them actively offering bribes to trump. They could have won and stood for something if they’d chosen to fight it, but were instead eager to give him money.

    30. joshdoereddit on

What the fuck is this headline? „May just be the start“? They are the fucking start. I won’t be surprised when they axe Seth Meyers. I’ll be really angry and sad. But you know they’re working on some bullshit reason to get rid of more late night shows.

This is going to be the best Turn Off the TV campaign ever. Disneys knees are shaking
