I’ll at least give China credit, if they pull this off they win the future. Trump will be dead before any real consequences occur, just like the boomers who elected him. Same as the USSR. China deserves the same successes NASA had in the 70s if they have the will and merit to do it. Increasingly, it’s apparent that they do as America’s efforts recede.
Personally, I’m hoping individual states launch their own space probes. With launch costs reducing and western space transportation being truly commercial, there’s no reason why California, Texas or Tennessee can’t bring Astronomy probes in-house to their colleges. As lasers get better and mass produced, deep-space capable radio stations will come down in price and work within a near-space Internet allowing for reliable mission management. This is achievable despite Trump.
This is somewhat outdated; latest is that [the Trump administration has told NASA to use the funding levels as stated for NASA in the House version of the FY 2026 appropriations bill if the government shuts down (as seems likely).](https://arstechnica.com/space/2025/09/amid-budget-uncertainty-nasa-gets-some-good-news-use-house-funding-levels/) So while this would include some cuts to NASA compared to FY 2025 (concentrated in earth science), it wouldn’t be such a massive cull of active programs. MSR notably seems to survive. Of course, even before Trump 2.0 NASA was struggling with flat budgets and cuts from previous years, so it has already had to push out several missions already. This could all change of course as the current administration is quite fickle, to say the least.
