The next logical step is to target the aircraft that are violating the airspace, either by land/sea-based air defence, or aircraft, or both. Even Russian radar warning receivers should tell their pilots that are being targeted.

If Russia keeps escalating this issue, NATO will have to decide at which point weapons will be fired.

If there is a risk of Russian intrusions over Estonian waters with Mig-31 or unarmed aircraft, the appropriate response is to escort them away, and to begin the project of placing very high-altitude SAM batteries which can shoot to altitudes of well over 82,000 foot in the affected area.

F-35s will have difficulty intercepting or shooting down Mig-31s flying at combat speed/altitude if they are flying in an evasive way, since Mig-31’s combat or cruising speed/altitude is very roughly Mach 0.75-1.23 faster and 32,000 foot higher (82,000 foot) than F-35’s combat or cruising speeds/altitude.

If a Mig-31 gets shot down during an interception over the sea, Russia can claim it was on the way to Kaliningrad and was not maneuvering evasively or flying at its combat speed/altitude in a way which would pose a threat.

There is a massive shortage of and demand for air defense batteries right now all around (not only in Ukraine or Denmark but in Turkey now, too). I would have thought a proportionate course of action would be to get SAMPT/ into mass-production, use it to replace Patriot in less threatened parts of Europe, and send one of the Patriot batteries from a less affected area to Estonia (due to its high operating altitide).

Europe could try to pursue a strategy of area denial with very high-altitude SAM batteries over the Baltics the same way China does in the sea west of Taiwan.

So now ruzzia is (successfully) conditioning Europe that ruzzian violations of European and NATO airspace are going to be a daily occurrence, and there ain’t shit NATO is going to do about it.
