What is even the point of the Lib Dems when they do not oppose encroachment on civil liberties?

I’ve spent years looking at digital ID and ID card policy.
Almost every countries scheme is different.
There are some good countries that do it well and some awful schemes out there.
It’s very much a question of the devil being in the detail of what is proposed.
You already can’t rent a house without being able to prove your identity.
I had to prove my identity to my employer.
How would a government issued ID change what already exists?

Other countries may be able to do this in a mature way which respects civil liberties.
Meanwhile the UK law requires people to submit their passport to large tech companies to access Wikipedia. I can entirely see UK ID cards being used to extend that kind of authoritarian crackdown, where everyone’s online accounts must be tied to their government ID so that you can be arrested for your political views more easily.
And supporting FPTP, and producing bar charts with sensible axes?
Lib Dems is so anti-privacy now it hurts. They are the ones supposed to defend privacy.
I am dead set against physical ID cards but I think digital IDs are not so bad. The vast majority of people are in the HMPO, DVLA or Home Office databases, so it’s not like we don’t already have digital IDs, it’s just that there’s this £80 intermediate step where you have to print a passport out.
The benefit of digital ID, for someone who doesn’t like ID cards, is that it can’t be made mandatory to carry, because you can’t force people to carry their phone around with them everywhere they go. Digital ID would take all the oxygen out of the proposals for physical ID cards which I consider to be a much greater threat to civil liberties.
