while Im skeptical they have a real „spymaster,“ the taliban probably and rightly sees themselves as having „won“ the war with the US. its also great PR if you want to scare a poor population into compliance.
its also why any attempt on the US’s part to cut a deal to use any airbases in Afghanistan is begging to be a set up for a demonstration of force by the taliban. And its why anyone with half a brain should be wondering why the hell the US would want back into Afghanistan at all.
The US ultimately had the option to go full german or japanese post war reconstruction in Afghanistan and didnt. There are many reasons why, in no small part to how poorly the US assembled and anointed the new leadership in the country early on. But it didnt, and any idea of going back in at this point is borderline insanity.
