      I was hoping Sinn Féin would run someone as the other candidates are so poor.

      Looks like this might be the first election where I spoil my vote.

      Edit: Well this has gotten people very angry. Gavin, Humphreys and Connolly are three awful candidates and I’m not voting for them, sorry this upsets you and the parasocial relationship you have with your favourite candidate. 🙂

      I thought Jarlath Burns would have been really interesting if he wanted to go for it. Great speaker, Irish speaker, President of the GAA. Maybe slightly less on the CV than other candidates

      Congratulations Heather Humphreys.

      FF voters aren’t transferring to Connelly.. while a decent SF candidate would probably have had a chance to benefit from some of their vote.

      This is the correct move by SF, no point in dividing the vote of the left and risking the reputation of their senior members. Won’t impact anything however. Looks like it might remain a 3 horse race, and even if there is another candidate they likely won’t have much impact on the vote share.

      Remarkable lack of ambition by SF that they couldn’t find their own candidate. Quite surprised at that tbh.

      Watch the media dig up tonnes more dirt on Connolly over the next few weeks now. I’d expect anyone who’s been to Syria with those clowns Wallace & Daly will have plenty of skeletons in their closet.

      Can’t see her winning it- Gavin/Humphries transfers will probably get one of them over the line.

      An understandable and welcome decision.
      Sinn Féin will need transfers from other Left-wing voters and cooperation from the other Left parties if they want to be the big dog in a possible future government.
      People who say that SF will go into coalition with Fianna Fáil seem to ignore the fact that McDonald would almost certainly have to rotate the role of Taoiseach with Martin or his successor, which most SF voters would loathe and may even make them look like a junior partner.
      Sinn Féin’s only realistic chance at being the main party of a government is one where the other left parties coalesce around a SF taoiseach.

      It’s a safe decision, and if Connolly wins then Sinn Féin will have a nice in with Labour and the SocDems.
      And if she loses? Well it wasn’t McDonald that put her forward, so no dirt on her hands as far as she’s concerned. And Sinn Féin will still get credit for not being egotistical (as some see it) and running their own candidate.
      Overall I’m happy to see the left uniting for once and putting their differences aside for a common goal and a unity candidate, even if that candidate is flawed.

      Sinn Féin have well and truly butchered this.

      Only saving grace for them is that they’ll save financial by backing Connolly but this is seriously damaging to their leadership’s reputation, and shows a complete lack of strategic planning.

      What was their strategy, it isn’t as if this is a bye-election they’ve had years to plan and it ends with them admitting defeat in their own options.

      As for Connolly, don’t be fooled by Reddit. It’ll be between Gavin and Humphreys as the polls indicate, Connolly’s previous on international politics and links to O’Doherty, Daly and co don’t make her appealing to the middle ground who’s main criteria for a president is a safe pair of hands.
