Researchers studied changes to meal timing in older adults and discovered people experience gradual shifts as they age. They also found characteristics that may contribute to mealtime shifts and revealed specific traits linked to an earlier death.
Results from the Mass General Brigham study are published in Communications Medicine
“Our research suggests that changes in when older adults eat, especially the timing of breakfast, could serve as an easy-to-monitor marker of their overall health status,” said lead author Hassan Dashti, a nutrition scientist and circadian biologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital and assistant professor of anesthesia at Harvard Medical School.
“Patients and clinicians can possibly use shifts in mealtime routines as an early warning sign to look into underlying physical and mental health issues. Also, encouraging older adults in having consistent meal schedules could become part of broader strategies to promoting healthy aging and longevity,” Dashti said.

but isnt intermittent fasting linked to better mental and physical health?
maybe the depressed peoples bodies are trying to push themselves into intermittent fasting as a way of self medicating the depression
They should better analyze the composition of those meals and the rest of their habits, because everything indicates that they are depressed and indulgent people. Study focused on achieving results without investigating any masked variables, it almost seems like religion.
The title says later breakfast time but then the article says changing breakfast time.
So actually it’s when you used to be an earlier breakfast eater and then you slip later and later that’s the problem? If you’ve always taken a late breakfast that’s ok?
The difference is important as a lot of people (myself included) get digestive upset/IBS style symptoms if we eat within the first few hours of waking.
Well the older people I know like my 70 year old parents eat breakfast earlier and earlier. I thought it was a common joke that dinner is at 4pm if you’re 65 or older.
